What is the difference between round, oval and rectangular?
Round: simplest, most economical, hinged cover swings open. Oval: inside-opening design allows pressure vessel use (cover passes through opening). Rectangular: for equipment loading.
Round atmospheric for tanks. Oval for pressure vessels (ASME VIII). Rectangular for loading granules, ingredients or tools.
Are manways CIP compatible?
Yes — sanitary manways are designed for CIP cycles. Smooth internal radii, flush mounting, drainable seals.
For SIP cycles, specify steam-rated gaskets (silicone or PTFE). Standard EPDM is CIP-only.
What gasket material should I specify?
EPDM standard for food/dairy CIP. Silicone for SIP and pharma (USP VI). PTFE for chemical service. Viton for solvents.
For mixed CIP/SIP service, silicone is the best general choice. Specify based on media compatibility and temperature.
Are manways available with locking systems?
Yes — multiple options: quick-release latches, bolted (for pressure), interlocked (safety), and lockable for HACCP control.
For confined space requirements (OSHA), specify lockable design with positive locking. Add LOTO requirements with RFQ.
What is the minimum size for OSHA compliance?
OSHA permit-required confined space minimum: 18" (457 mm) diameter for round, 16"×18" for oval. Provides sufficient access for emergency rescue.
For routine inspection, 18" is adequate. For maintenance with tools/equipment, 24" preferred. Specify access requirements.
Are sight glasses available on manways?
Yes — integrated sight glasses on manway covers available for visual inspection without opening. Tempered borosilicate per DIN 8902.
Common request for biotech/pharma applications. Combined with internal lighting for video monitoring options.
What documentation is provided?
Standard: 3.1 MTR for body, FDA compliance for gasket, pressure test certificate.
For pressure-rated: ASME VIII certification, full hydrotest documentation. For pharma: full BPE package including surface finish report.
