Operating Conditions

Pressure-temperature rating for astm a312 industrial pipe.

Pressure rating depends heavily on schedule (wall thickness) and temperature. ASME B31.3 process piping code used for design.

Sch 40S Sch 80S Temperature (°C) Pressure (bar) -40 68 176 284 392 500 0 45 90 136 181

Service Conditions

  • Sch 10S @ 38°C: ~30 bar typical
  • Sch 40S @ 38°C: ~100 bar typical
  • Sch 80S @ 38°C: ~165 bar typical
  • Temperature range: –196°C to +800°C
  • Creep limit (316L): +525°C
  • Hydrotest: 1.5× working pressure

Actual ratings depend on size, material and operating conditions. Confirm via RFQ for project-specific requirements.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about astm a312 industrial pipe.

Engineering and procurement questions we hear most often. For project-specific guidance, send your application details via RFQ.

What is the difference between A312 and A270?

A312 is for industrial/general pipe — chemical, oil & gas, marine, structural. A270 is specifically for sanitary food/dairy applications with mill-polished interior.

A312 has thicker walls and is rated for industrial pressures. A270 is thin-wall sanitary tubing. Different standards for different purposes.

Should I use welded (EFW) or seamless pipe?

Welded (EFW = electric fusion welded) is most common — economical, consistent, suitable for 95% of applications. Seamless costs more but eliminates the welded seam.

For severe service (high pressure, corrosive media, sour service), seamless preferred. For standard industrial applications, EFW with 100% RT is appropriate.

What schedule should I specify?

Schedule selection depends on pressure, temperature and corrosion allowance. ASME B31.3 provides design calculations.

Common: Sch 10S for utility/low pressure, Sch 40S for general process, Sch 80S for high pressure or sour service. Provide design pressure/temperature for proper sizing.

Is NACE compliance available?

Yes — NACE MR0175 compliance for sour service (H2S environments) available. Specify with order — affects material selection and welding procedure.

NACE-compliant pipe has restrictions on hardness and chemistry. Required for oil & gas applications with sour gas. Documentation includes NACE compliance certificate.

What NDE is included as standard?

Standard: hydrostatic test per A312 (1.5× rating). Optional: 100% radiographic test (RT), ultrasonic test (UT), eddy current, dye penetrant.

For critical service (sour, high pressure), specify 100% RT and request reports. For nuclear or aerospace, additional NDE may be required.

Are 304 and 316L interchangeable?

304 is general-purpose stainless. 316L has 2-3% molybdenum providing better corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides.

For chemical processing, marine, or aggressive media, specify 316L. For utility air, water, low-corrosion service, 304 is acceptable and lower cost.

What documentation is provided?

Standard: EN 10204 3.1 MTR with heat numbers, dimensional and visual inspection reports, hydrotest certificate.

For critical service: 100% RT reports, NACE compliance, dimensional inspection per ASME B36.19M, charpy impact test for low-temperature service.
